Barcelonas incredible monument |
In the time honoured tradition of cathedrals taking 3,4 or 5 generations to complete, Antoni Gaudi spent much of his life, designing and building this incredible structure. Alan Wicker once commented that only the Taj Mahal lived up to its billing when finally viewed for real. Maybe he'd never seen this. As soon as it comes into view, it takes the breath away.
Outrageous, preposterous, daring, incredible. All are inadequate.
The level of detail is not done justice in these pictures. Almost every facet is carved or has an image. Not in the manner of say, the Alcazar at Granada (which is plaster mould friezes), but an original piece of work in its own right. Just look at the tops of the towers - all different.
Far more eloquent books than my enthusiasm for this place have been written on Gaudis work, most are in the "coffee table" format, loaded with pictures, and rightly so.
